The ThinkPad X60s is the very definition of portability. With a weight of 3.5 pounds (1.58 kg) carrying the notebook becomes a pleasure. And to prove to us all that size matters and that “small” is not necessarily a bad thing, Lenovo gave its device the following measurements: 10.5 inches (26.67 cm) wide, 8.3 inches (21.08 cm) deep, 0.8 inch (2.03 cm) thick at the front and 1.1 inches (2.79 cm) back thickness. The notebook can be really (and easily) held in one hand, doing the typing stuff with the other, when the situation requires it.
Built to resist any traveling experience, the X60s has a very sturdy and robust chassis, designed to last at a 3 ft (0.91 m) drop (don’t try this at home or anywhere else, for that matter). The hard drive also has a mechanism to protect your data from accidents by lifting the reading/writing arm off the plates.
Two drains are in charge of taking away any liquid that you might consider spilling over the keyboard. Steel hinges are fastening the screen to the body and the result is that the display will freeze right there where you put it. This comes very handy when traveling on a bumpy road.
Usually, we would expect a small keyboard on a small notebook or ultraportable. Here Lenovo comes to show us that we can be wrong. The keys are big in size, with a nice and firm travel and feedback. They feel good to the touch and individual. The chance of misspressing a key is minimal and it is entirely your fault, not the keyboards’. The lack of the touchpad (due to the small size) is very well (and even better, we might say) complemented by the pointing stick that does its job by a flawless manner. The mouse buttons work on the same great manner as the entire keyboard. Great feedback and travel, nice feel at the touch.
The display of the ThinkPad X60s is a 12 inch one with a 1,024×768 native resolution. Images are displayed on medium level of quality, but since this notebook is not designed for multimedia, this screen will do. For office work is good enough. Viewing angles are not the strongest point of this display as well as the brightness and the contrast. It is worth mentioning that the horizontal angles are better than the vertical ones.
In terms of connectivity, the ThinkPad X60s is very well endowed with almost everything you need. On the left side there are a 1 USB 2.0 port, a PCMCIA card slot, a Monitor out port, a Secure Digital (SD) memory card slot, an Ethernet LAN port. On the right side you will find: 2 USB 2.0 ports, FireWire Port, Modem port, Microphone, Headphone jack and Power jack. And further more, wireless is this baby’s cup of tea: WiFi 802.11 a, b and g, Bluetooth 2.0, EVDO, IrDA. As you can see, with the ThinkPad X60s you can connect to almost anyone, anything, anywhere, anytime.
The power of thought is given by the Intel Core Duo low voltage processor that runs at 1.6 GHz. For office applications and surfing the web this is more than enough. But beware of that multitasking. Although the processor supports it, the 512 MB of memory are not enough for it and you might experience slow downs in your machine. Or, you will buy more memory (up to 2GB supported) and the headache is gone.
Final note
The first thought that comes to mind right now is: “Too bad for the missing optical drive!”. As for the rest, wow. Every modern piece of technology is found in the ThinkPad X60s packed nice and tight ready to help its owner. The design is nice, the keyboard feels great, the connectivity is by far far ahead the competition. Long battery life and light weight, sturdy and robust design and chassis make this notebook a must have for those traveling a lot. Our marks for this notebook are 8.5 for its design and 8.5 for the tech specs .
